Miniatur Wunderland Unveiled Largest Model Airport in the World

Miniatur Wunderland, a theme park of sorts in Hamburg, Germany, has acquired fame for housing a range of miniature wonders such as the biggest railway model in the world. Recently the company made public another project of amazing proportions – the largest scale model airport in the world.

The project amounted to a total of $ 5 M in constructing the airport and more than six years were spent in developing it. The airport is modeled on Hamburg Airport, which is the oldest operational airport in the history of commercial aviation. The airport is now opened for public.

Miniatur Wunderland is located nearby River Elbe in the Speicherstadt area in Hamburg, which is the second largest city in Germany. The Miniatur Wonderland airport is operational in almost every detail. It is a great replica of the Hamburg Airport and has paid meticulous attention to details, even the most minuscule ones.

The airport model has airplanes that traverse down the various runways, and also take off. There are bright yellow lights that illuminate the airport at night. There are vehicles such as tow trucks, cars. The runways have red and blue lights. The tracks are painted in white for directing the vehicles. There are street lights, lampposts as well as a huge number of minute details.

40 planes are showcased at the Miniatur Wunderland Airport, both from Airbus and Boeing. There are brand names such as Lufthansa, airberlin, Air France, TUI, Emirates and KLM featured in the airplanes. There are more than 90 vehicles all of them operate on their own and run along the runway. The vehicles can be directed on their own using the car system installed inside these. These are managed externally through computers.

The fact that the planes at the Miniatur Wonderland Airport can actually take off is like the icing on the cake. The base of the aircraft is connected to the runway via tiny wires that help the planes take off.
