The Roman Empire was an entity that left its mark on the whole world in the ancient times. The might and power of the empire was known all over the world. If one thing can be stated as being one of the significant indicators to the illustrious history of Rome, it is the Roman Coliseum.  The ancient monument is even now one of the most famous buildings ever built in Rome. The structure is part of a significant portion in the Roman history.

The Roman Coliseum was built in AD 70. The monument was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire. The structure was capable of seating almost 70 000 members of the audience for one show. The original name for the Coliseum was Flavian Amphitheater. The name is not used anymore.

The amphitheater was constructed during the reign of Emperors Vespasian and Titus. The construction for the Flavian Amphitheater was begun in 72 AD. The coliseum was finished in 80 AD. The amphitheater was built in the vicinity of where the old castle was situated, at the Lake of Emperor Nero. The Coliseum was used since then regularly, right until Ad 216, when a lightning strike damaged the structure.

The Roman Coliseum was built again in AD 238, and gladiator matches were held here till when the sport was denounced as too brutal by Christian authorities. The Coliseum was in disuse and eventually fell into disrepair by 538 AD, as the structure was affected by two major earthquakes.
