What to Do In Amsterdam, Other Than Smoking Pot
Netherlands | August 27, 2010 | No discussion yetPulp Fiction fans in the world would see Amsterdam as being a haven for ‘pot’ lovers who like hanging out at hash bars. Believe it or not, there is more to do when in Amsterdam. Well, other than smoking pot, we say!
Dive into the artistic side of this city –
Hop into a tram from Spui all the way to Museumplein, which is where the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum are enough to keep you occupied for a good number of hours.
Walk around as you view Van Gogh’s life through art. The Golden Age of Holland is what makes for the central topic at the Rijksmuseum. Do not, whatever you do, miss the Vermeer’s Milkmaid.
A day trip would be nice –
If you’re looking for an excursion, taking a 15 minute ride to Harlem might be worth the trip. You could browse through some rather fashionable boutiques. Visit the St. Bavo church, which is noted for its Gothic style architecture; or you could just walk down to the Frans Hals Art Museum.
Just for kicks, you could try your hand at some of the dishes being churned out at the rather spacious Café Brinkman. To top it off, stopover at Café 1900 for some drinks, while you’re on your way back to the train station.
Drink it all up –
There are over 1200 intriguing pubs which dot the region of Amsterdam. You have more than a choice here, don’t you! You could start out at the Heineken brewery. It is quite an interesting sight, watching all that famous beer being produced from scratch. You could, alternatively, check out Café Belgique which serves some rather smooth Belgian brews – the likes of La Trappe Dubbel and La Chouffe.
Biking it up at night –
Amsterdam is said to be extremely romantic by night. The city is kept aglow from lit up bridges to canals. You could begin at Waterloopein and keep going until after Jodenbreestraat, this will take you into Nieuwmarkt. You could pay a visit to the Waag, which is a pub/restaurant which was once part of the city wall. Or you could opt for a trip to the brown bar at Café‘t Loosje.
Club-bing it –
If you’re in the mood for some pre-partying, you might want to head to Seymour Likely or Bitterzoet. These places have some decent live DJs spinning.
If you want to directly join the dance crowd, then your options come down to Club More, Paradiso and Mazzo. If a laidback vibe is what you want, then you could choose to hang out at Café Alto. You might catch some of the local jazz acts playing there.
Shopping for some treasures –
Walk down the rather famous 9 streets. Here you could pick up some cutting edge fashion and have your choice among eclectic wares. Don’t miss Lady Day for anything in the world. The place sells vintage and European fashion; all this at dirt cheap prices. Get pampered at Spoiled where they’ll custom match you to a pair of designer jeans.
