Venice City
Italy | November 3, 2010 | 1 CommentIt appears as though Venice city spent much of its time maintaining its beauty. You, as a traveler, can enjoy the glory of the Grand Canal palaces. However, do not have an iota of doubt that the city packs quite a punch. The fact that Venice city is an engineering marvel has been known to many. The city abounds in marble churches that are perched on ancient posts that are driven deep inside the ‘barene’ or mud banks.
It is astonishing to note that the city has nerves of steel. Individuals from other cities would be terrified by water that approaches their doors, or they would escape at the first alert of high tide (also known as acqua alta). However, Venetian resolve beats reason and logic hands down.
Venetians and Venice never fade. Venetians have given the world red paintings, fine wines, pulsating music, and Marco Polo spice-route flavors. The fashion of the town is bohemian and chic.

The masterpieces of art lie within every square kilometer. However, Venice is not a city to rest on its laurels. There seems to be no dearth of inspiration in this magical city. The alleys (or calli in Italian) are home to large number of artists that hammer out shoes that are crested like lagoon birds. It is increasingly common for cooks to create dishes on hotplates with a single burner. Musicians play 18th century cellos. They also indulge in riveting concerts with the usual punk-rock bravado.
This may give one the feeling that the 19th century Romantic poets were misled. City of Venice is not the place for genteel decay. The ancient palaces or ‘palazzi’ are home to billionaires and trendy biennales. These palaces have wonderful masterpieces and stunning contemporary art and architecture. The city abounds in showrooms and galleries, many of which are located in back alleys. You should time your visit perfectly. Venetians have made the phenomenon of walking on water simple. And they just will not stop at that!
Do not be selfish and greedy and assume you can enjoy the entire beauty of Venice by yourself. The January chill, too, draws thousands of globetrotters. The good aspect is that you will always have wonderful company. Venice city is easily accessible and surprisingly cheap. The city of Venice is self-selecting. It will take time for travelers to get used to the boats and calli, instead of cars and highways. It is common for sculptors, harpsichordists, chefs, and dreamers to bump into each other over ‘risotto di seppie’ or squid risotto. The city has authentic pubs and restaurants known as ‘osterie’. The crowd may give you the appearance that you are in an Art Biennale. However, it might just turn out to be an average Wednesday night.
It is best to view this fantastic city during the change of acts. That is, after day travelers rush out to beat the noon traffic, and before cruise liners deliver fresh travelers in the Piazza San Marco. This would leave you to see entire city of Venice in three hours flat. Such visitors might have to forego the experience of watching gondoliers exercising their vocal cords. Other wonderful sights include mosaic artisans converging at a pub for shop talk over a drink of spritz, which is a ‘prosecco’-based drink.
